On Saturday, December 12. Third year students in the CSL ことばの不思議 program joined with freshman and sophomore CSL students in the 地域活性化策 and Vファーレン長崎ワクワク ウオークprograms for a guided tour of the Nagasaki Museum of History and Culture. A total of 28 international students and 4 Japanese students attended the tour in three groups as part of a combined service learning program activity. Guided tours were conducted in both English and Japanese. The focus of the tour was on the permanent exhibition dealing with the historic exchanges in Nagasaki with the Portuguese, Netherlands, China, and Korea as well as the history of Christianity in Nagasaki. The Nagasaki Museum of History and Culture (長崎歴史文化博物館) holds 48,000 items in its collection, including many historical documents that explain the significance of Nagasaki as the only window opened to the world during the “Sakoku” period of isolation in Japan. Students were able to deepen their understanding of the “hidden Christian” culture and learn what Nagasaki was like during the Edo period. Students were also able to enjoy live historical reenactments as part of their tour. We give our thanks to the talented staff and tour guides at the Nagasaki Museum of History and Culture for their support and kindness. Thank you for the opportunity to learn more about the rich history of Nagasaki.
