On June 22, students in the English Structure<\/em> (\u82f1\u8a9e\u306e\u3057\u304f\u307f) class welcomed guest speaker Professor Keiichi Minamikawa<\/strong>, who delivered a lecture entitled “What Will You Do by Learning English?”<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Professor Minamikawa began by reflecting on his own experiences learning English in junior high school. At that time, English classes often emphasized memorization, and students were expected to learn vocabulary, grammar, and expressions by heart. He encouraged students to think critically about whether there might be more meaningful and effective ways to learn a language.<\/span><\/p>\n

Throughout the lecture, Professor Minamikawa combined explanations of English phonetic rules and grammatical changes with stories from his experiences working with people living in poverty in Cambodia. By connecting language learning to real-world experiences, he demonstrated that English is not simply a school subject but a tool for communication, understanding, and international engagement.<\/span><\/p>\n

The lecture closely reflected the goals of the English Structure<\/em> course, an omnibus-style class designed to provide students with a foundation for the academic study of English. The course explores the historical development of English, the history of English education in Japan, the diversity of English as a global language, and linguistic perspectives on the English that surrounds us in daily life. Students also develop the academic English skills necessary for advanced study.<\/span><\/p>\n

Professor Minamikawa’s lecture encouraged students to reconsider the purpose of learning English and to view language study not as an exercise in memorization, but as an opportunity to connect with people, cultures, and global issues.
