On Sunday, June 8, three professors from the Department of International Studies took part in an adventurous day trip to Unzen—Japan’s first designated national park. Representing China, Korea, and the United States, the professors spent the day walking the trails of this historical and scenic area, enjoying both nature and the opportunity to meet outside of the university environment.

This outing wasn’t just about sightseeing. It was a symbolic celebration of the growing diversity within our department. The professors from China and Korea are new additions to the faculty this academic year, and this walking tour was an opportunity to build connections outside the classroom.

Unzen, located in Nagasaki Prefecture, is renowned for its hot springs, volcanic landscapes, and historical significance. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, it was a popular destination for foreign visitors and Christian missionaries—making it a fitting location for a cross-cultural gathering. As the group explored the lush trails and steam-filled geysers, conversations ranged from cultural exchange and language education to shared academic interests and future collaborations.

After the walking tour, the group traveled to Nagasaki City for a reflective visit to Suwa Shrine, one of the region’s most important Shinto shrines. The visit offered a moment of quiet contemplation, reminding us of the deep cultural and spiritual history that shapes this part of Japan.

The Department of International Studies is proud of its diverse faculty and the strong sense of community it fosters. This small excursion to Unzen and Suwa Shrine was a joyful reminder that international understanding begins not just in the classroom, but also through shared experiences in the beautiful and meaningful places that surround us. Let’s explore together in the Department of International Studies.
