多文化コミュニケーション学科のオムニバス科目「英語のしくみ」において、6月29日、ウクライナ出身の客員教授であるOlena Luhovyk（オレーナ・ルホヴィク）先生をお招きし、特別講義「ウクライナでの英語（English in Ukraine）」が実施されました。

本授業は、ウクライナにおける英語教育の現状や日常生活での使われ方を探り、日本とのアプローチの違いを比較することで、学生たちが自らの英語学習の経験や動機を見つめ直すことを目的としています。

「なぜ英語を学ぶのか」を問いかける

ルホヴィク先生は講義の冒頭、「なぜ日本の人々は英語を学ぶのか？」という問いを学生たちに投げかけ、ご自身がウクライナで英語を学び始めたきっかけや理由を共有されました。さらに、「教室の外で英語を使う機会はいつあるか？」「英語はあなたの将来にとって重要だと思うか？」といった問いを通じて、学生たちの主体的な意見を引き出しながら双方向の対話を進められました。

世代による英語力の違いと、キャリアにおける重要性

講義の後半では、ウクライナにおける言語環境のリアルな現状が語られました。ルホヴィク先生によると、ウクライナでは世代によって英語の流暢さに大きな差があるとのことです。激動の時代を生きてきた40代以上の世代は英語の習得度が比較的低い傾向にある一方、若い世代にとっては、キャリアの選択肢を広げるため、また世界の最新情報にアクセスするための不可欠なツールとして、英語が極めて重要な役割を果たしています。

「日本人に最も必要な言語とは？」

最後のディスカッションでは、「日本人にとって最も学ぶ価値のある言語は何か？」というテーマについて活発な意見交換が行われました。学生たちは、ルホヴィク先生がもたらす新鮮な異文化の視点に触れることで、単なる語学学習を超えた「グローバル社会における対話の手段としての英語」の価値を深く実感した様子でした。

On June 29, the Department’s omnibus course, “Structure of the English Language,” hosted a special guest lecture titled “English in Ukraine,” led by Visiting Professor Olena Luhovyk from Ukraine.

The session explored how English is taught and utilized in daily life within Ukraine. By comparing Ukrainian and Japanese approaches to English education, the lecture provided students with a valuable opportunity to reflect on their own language-learning experiences and motivations.

Questioning the “Why” Behind English Learning

Prof. Luhovyk began the lesson by posing a fundamental question to the classroom: “Why do people learn English in Japan?” She then shared her own personal journey and reasons for studying English in Ukraine. Keeping the session highly interactive, she prompted students with thought-provoking questions, such as: “When can we use English outside the classroom?” and “Do you think English is important for your future?”

Generational Shifts and Career Impact in Ukraine

During the lecture, Prof. Luhovyk shared fascinating cross-cultural insights regarding how English proficiency in Ukraine heavily depends on the generation. Individuals over the age of 40 generally tend to be less proficient. In contrast, for the younger generation, English has become a vital asset—not only for expanding career choices but also for gaining direct access to global information.

“What is the Most Important Language for Japanese People?”

The session concluded with an engaging discussion centered on what the most crucial language for Japanese people to know is today. Through these conversations, students were able to experience fresh, cross-cultural perspectives, shifting their view of English from a mere academic subject to a powerful tool for global connection.
