On Saturday, November 20, students in the 3rd year Community Service Learning (CSL) program in the Department of Foreign Languages guided 1st and 2nd year CSL students on a walking tour (“Saruku” tour) of Nagasaki city. The tour began at Urakami station where students made their way to San-o shrine and the one-legged Torii. From there, the tour followed toward Nagasaki Station visiting Sakamoto International Cemetery and Martyrdom of the 26 Saints Monument. The tour passed by Fukasai Temple on the way to Suwa Shrine visiting the Tateyama Air Raid Shelters at the base of the mountain. The tour ended with a walk along Nakashima River and the Spectacles Bridge.

The focus of the tour was on the historic places in a close radius to Nagasaki Station. Students were able to deepen their understanding of the history and culture of Nagasaki and learn the past that helped create the Nagasaki that we know today. It was a good opportunity to learn more about the rich history of Nagasaki.
