On Saturday, July 5, Nagasaki Wesleyan University hosted a special event called International Adventure Day. This exciting activity brought together local junior high school students, ALT (Assistant Language Teachers) from the community, international students, and special guests from the Isahaya Board of Education. It was a day full of fun, learning, and international friendship.
The purpose of the event was to give junior high school students a chance to enjoy English in a fun and relaxed environment. It was also a great opportunity for them to meet people from other countries and cultures. The students from the university’s Department of International Studies, including both Japanese and international students, worked together to plan and help run the event. International students attending the event were from the Philippines, Thailand, China, Korea, Nepal, and Vietnam. This represents the diverse and multicultural atmosphere of the University.
The day began with warm greetings and fun ice-breaking games to help everyone feel comfortable. Soon, the rooms were filled with laughter and smiles as the junior high students talked and played games in English with the ALTs and university students. Everyone was kind and supportive, so even the shy students quickly became more confident in speaking English.
The activities included team games such as a board game, bingo game, and a blind question game. Students were able to practice simple conversations that made learning English fun. University students and ALTs served as group leaders, and they helped guide the younger students in both English and Japanese. The visitors from the Isahaya of Education also joined in the fun, sharing stories and encouraging the students to enjoy learning about the world.
At the end of the program, everyone gathered to enjoy a delicious hamburger lunch. Eating together gave everyone more time to talk and make new friends. For many students, it was their first time speaking English with foreigners and university students in a real-life setting. Some of them said they now want to study English more and someday travel abroad.
The event was a big success. It created a positive, exciting space where young students could experience international communication. It also showed the strong teamwork and spirit of Nagasaki Wesleyan University’s students.
We would like to thank all the junior high school students, teachers, ALTs, Isahaya Board of Education members, and university volunteers who made the day so special. We hope to hold more events like this in the future to bring people together through English and friendship.
