As part of the Community Service Learning (CSL) program at Nagasaki Wesleyan University, international students visited the permanent exhibit at Nagasaki Museum of History & Culture on June 10, 2023. This museum visit allowed students the opportunity to dive into the rich and diverse heritage of Nagasaki, a city steeped in history. Exploring the museum’s exhibits, students discovered the intrinsic value of learning about Nagasaki’s past, understanding its cultural tapestry, and appreciating the resilience of its people. Through artifacts, documents, and interactive displays, the museum vividly portrayed the significant events that have shaped Nagasaki, such as its role as an international trading port, the Christian history of Nagasaki as well as the tragic atomic bombing during World War II, and the subsequent process of rebuilding and renewal. The museum visit was followed by a tour of the air raid shelters of Tateyama and Suwa Shrine. By immersing in Nagasaki’s history and culture, students gained a deeper appreciation for the city’s unique identity, fostering cross-cultural understanding.
