Learning English Through the Bible with Inaba-sensei

On Monday, June 16, we were honored to welcome Inaba-sensei from Chinzei Gakuin High School as a guest speaker in the “英語のしくみ” (Structure of English) class at Nagasaki Wesleyan University.
Her lecture, titled “Learning English Through the Bible,” explored the deep and fascinating connections between language, religion, and culture. Students learned how English vocabulary has been shaped by religious history and how Christian ideas have influenced the English language.
Inaba-sensei introduced the etymology and cultural background of several common words such as “scapegoat,” “holiday,” “talent,” “goodbye,” and “carnival.”
Each of these words, she explained, has roots in religious traditions, some going back to the Bible and others to Christian rituals and festivals.
The session was not only informative but also thought-provoking, encouraging students to reflect on how language carries history and belief systems within it.
We sincerely thank Inaba-sensei for her inspiring and meaningful contribution to our class.
6月16日に、本学「英語のしくみ」クラスにて、鎮西学院高等学校の稲葉先生を特別講師としてお迎えしました。
講義のテーマは「聖書を通して学ぶ英語」。宗教・言語・文化がどのように影響し合っているかについて、深く興味深いお話をしてくださいました。
「scapegoat（身代わり）」「holiday（祝日）」「talent（才能）」「goodbye（さようなら）」「carnival（カーニバル）」など、私たちが日常的に使う英単語の中には、宗教的な背景や聖書に由来する語源を持つものが多くあることを、具体的な例と共に学ぶことができました。
授業は非常に示唆に富み、学生たちにとって、言語の奥深さと歴史的背景に目を向けるきっかけとなる貴重な時間となりました。
