Students in the Department of Foreign Language’s Community Service Learning (CSL) program were asked to share their thoughts about the university. The third question presented to the students is:
“What did you learn during your first year at the university?”

Student responses are as follows:

I learned about English, Chinese, and culture.

What I learned in first year is different countries, cultures and religions. For example, Japan, Vietnam, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, China, etc.

In my first year I learned from the textbook Mina no Nihongo (みんなの日本語) which is used in the Japanese languages classes.

During the first year of my university I was taught only Japanese language so that I could understand the classes that are mainly held in the Japanese. During this period as an international student I found myself challenging the advanced learning of Japanese language.

I learned a lot during the first year. What I learned has changed my values significantly and it was also an opportunity to change my outlook on life. People can change their way of thinking in a year I noticed this in the first year.

My first year at Wesleyan University was “a recalling English year”. Improving my English proficiency is my priority purpose of learning things with a goal of getting a job using English someday.

I went to Cambodia and Thailand for two weeks during summer vacation. It is the university’s program for studying abroad. The things I saw there were very different from Japan. For example, there was no bath, there were many children who don’t have parents. What Japanese takes for granted was not natural for them. So I could change my feeling of value to things and have pleotropic and various viewpoints.
