International students enjoyed exploring and learning about the rich history found in Isahaya city. Students met at the university entrance on Monday, October 23 during the Anniversary of the founding of Chinzei Academy to join a “saruku” walking tour around Isahaya. Students learned about local history and historical sites located between Chinzei Gakuin University and the downtown area. A total of 20 students and 2 professors joined the walking tour.

Students enjoyed strolling along Nagasaki Sugar Road from the university to Azalea Park and viewing and learning about Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines along the way. Students visited the ruins of Takashiro or Isahaya castle which was built during the Taisho period.

The “Spectacles Bridge” or “Megane-bashi”, a double arch stone bridge which spans a pond in Azalea Park was the highlight of the walking tour. The bridge, a designated cultural asset, was originally built over the Honmyo river in 1839, but relocated to the park after the flood of 1957.

Participants were able to experience and learn of various historical places and local events.
